Chapter Four

By the time Zoe pulled into the parking lot at what she was calling the building with no name, the lot was three quarters full. She parked in a spot some distance from Wade’s SUV, checked her makeup one last time in the mirror, and climbed out of her car. Not knowing exactly what kind of place this was, she’d chosen not to take a purse tonight. Instead, she had her identification and some money in a little wristlet. She had enough cash to buy a drink, if this was a bar, and her usual twenty dollar bill for emergencies. She hoped that would be enough.

A bell was set into the stucco next to the carved door, and she depressed it with a finger almost steady. When the door opened, a tall, very muscular man stood in the opening, his body filling the space and blocking her view.

“May I help you?” His deep voice had a very courteous but remote tone to it.

“Yes.” She wished her mouth wasn’t suddenly so dry. “I would like to come inside, please.”

One corner of his mouth tried to hitch up in a smile. “Of course. Are you on the list?”

She frowned. “The list?” Damn!

“Yes.” The smile still played at his lips. “Or a guest pass?”

Guest pass. Well, didn’t she just feel too stupid.

“No, I’m sorry.” She flashed her best smile at him. “But I’d like to apply for one. Can I do that?”

The man studied her as if memorizing her features. “If you have a reference, you could have them call here and make the request for you.”

She was feeling more stupid and irritated by the moment. Smoothing her hands down the thin material of her dress, she lifted to her tiptoes and tried to see over the man’s shoulder. With a movement so casual it hardly seemed to happen, he moved enough to keep her view of the interior blocked.

“I saw a friend of mine come in here,” she told him, giving him another taste of her smile. “If I could just come in and find him, I know he’d vouch for me.”

“If your friend has a cell phone, perhaps you could call him and explain your situation. Then he or she can make the arrangements for you.”

“But—”

The man glanced over her shoulder, and she turned to see a couple standing behind her. She’d been so focused, she hadn’t heard them approach. Her eyes widened as she looked at them. The woman was wearing sandals with stiletto heels, a very short leather skirt, and a halter top with a wool stole to ward off the evening chill. The man was also dressed in leather—pants and a vest and a soft-looking jacket.

“I’ll be right with you,” the man told them. He looked directly at Zoe. “I’m sorry. If you contact your friend, I’m sure we can be of more help to you next time. But for now, I’ll have to ask you to leave.”

She knew when she’d hit a wall.

“Thank you for your time,” she told him and moved away.
